How does PeakSERP get its ranking data?

We get our data from Google’s SERPs via a third-party data service. This gives us the freshest, most reliable view of the SERPs possible. It also allows us to give you a view of the SERPs specific to the location and language that best represents your audience.

How many keywords should I be tracking?

We recommend only tracking your primary keyword for each article. This offers a good balance between coverage and information overload. It also makes your summary ranking statistics more useful, as they can be interpreted as page-level instead of just query-level statistics.

Should I track my keywords every day?

Daily tracking is a good default. You don’t need to look at your statistics every day, but having your tracker update daily gives you a better understanding of which ranking changes are random fluctuations from Google testing and which are lasting changes in your SERP position.

Weekly tracking is usually fine for new projects in the so-called sandbox period.

How is a rank tracker different from Google Search Console?

Google Search Console (GSC) provides you with a sampling of all your ranking, click, and impression information. While that data is useful for understanding your traffic, it doesn’t serve as a replacement for rank trackers.
First, GSC data is only a sample of your real traffic.
Second, GSC data convolutes several factors. Your data from every region, language, and device are all presented together as a single number.
Third, GSC combines data from every search term. That makes the average position metric virtually meaningless, as it can improve for reasons that are positive, neutral or even negative (like having low-ranking keywords drop entirely from the SERPs).

Rank trackers like PeakSERP take their data from the Google SERPs instead of GSC, making our statistics cleaner and more easily actionable. Lastly, we provide data on who else is ranking in the SERPs, giving you a more complete picture of the competitive landscape than you can get from GSC alone.
